Sustainable Agriculture for better livelihood
Sustainable agriculture like apiculture, animal husbandry, irrigation, etc is the key to true security of livelihood of Ethiopians. Small-scale apiculture projects are allowing communities to produce honey, wax and improved types of bees at least twice a year. Markets have expanded beyond local consumption and products are transported to larger centers, bringing income as well.
Promoting and supporting sustainable forest management and natural resource management is helping the communities in implementing beekeeping activity, improving food security and livelihood.
What’s involved in Sustainable Agriculture Development?
Developing sustainable agriculture for Ethiopia will mean training farmers in better agricultural practices and giving them improved seed varieties so they can be able to achieve their goals in crop production. When development groups implement projects like this, there is also an opportunity to introduce off-farm activities, such as income-generating activities for women that increase and diversify household income while empowering women. Building capacity in the community and introducing activities to manage natural resources, such as forests, soil and water, etc may also be done.
Projects that promote sustainable agriculture can be beneficial in the short term as well as over the long term. Offering local people livelihood opportunities allows them to take care of their immediate food needs while helping to ensure that they will feel ownership of a project they have built themselves. This type of model encourages long-term participation for a truly sustainable system.
Sustainable agriculture also includes helping people better manage beekeeping activities so they can have greater income and secure food security, especially in those areas that have better forest resources to implement apiculture. Some organizations help groups improve beekeeping activities as well as improve the productivity of bees in producing honey. They also assist with honey marketing so people can improve their economic situation as well.
